The whistle blows, the engine chugs and the rail carriages slide forward down the tracks. Your Monteverde Cloud Forest Train adventure has begun!
Trainforest is perfect for children of all ages – from 2 to 92 or beyond – an especially fun family vacation tour.
Replica old-fashioned steam trains each with 3 comfortable and safe passenger carriages travel 6 km (3.7 mi) down narrow-gauge railway tracks into the cloud forest. Your bilingual naturalist guides will inform you during the journey about the forest and history of the property as a cattle ranch, teach you about important plants and trees, and point out any wildlife to be seen.
An exciting ride through a tunnel and over rail bridges takes you across the mountains from former cattle ranch to primary forest. After approximately 30 minutes, you’ll disembark at the Mirador (look-out-point), where the closeness of the forest falls away to reveal a breathtaking panorama of towering Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal with its dam and islands, the extinct volcano Cerro Chato and the San Gerardo Waterfall. They all seem close enough to touch being only 9 km (5.6 mi) away “as the crow flies.”
You can stay at the spacious concrete viewing platform, taking in the views of the surrounding protected forests of Arenal National Park and Costa Rica’s largest private reserve, the Children’s Eternal Rainforest. Or, join the local naturalist guide for a short walk on an easy natural trail to learn more about the ecosystem of one of the most famous rainforests in the world. At our “warming cabin,” a delicious fresh coffee, steaming hot chocolate or refreshing natural juice and snacks await you upon your return.
Then it’s time to board your sturdy “iron horse” once again for your return to the Central Station.
Trainforest’s 90-minute journey departs every hour between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, every day of the year. Each train carries 50 passengers in three rail carriages. The tour is completely handicapped accessible (excluding the forest nature walk). In case of rain, each train carriage is outfitted with secure transparent plastic curtains for weather protection.
We recommend bringing a camera, sun block, rain jacket or poncho and warm clothing in layers. At 1,800m (5,900 ft.) elevation, average temperatures are 16-18 C (61-64 F)← Back to Activities
