Don Juan Cruz was born to one of the first pioneering families to settle in the Monteverde area. For most of his life he has been associated with coffee and has always enjoyed sharing his history and the culture with frequent visitors to his small farm. Monteverde is a good place to learn about the process required to create a great cup of coffee using authentic techniques that date back a few generations.
Chocolate is another of the traditional crops grown in Costa Rica, while at Don Juan’s farm, you will get an insight into the traditional methods that our ancestors used to roast the beans, separate the husks and finally grind the beans. On the tour you will be completely immersed for 30 minutes within the world of chocolate enjoying its delicious aromas and learning about its history. Participate in the chocolate making process and have the opportunity to taste the fruit of the cacao pod and observe how the small cocoa beans are carefully converted into a rich tasting chocolate drink.
After learning about growing and processing coffee and chocolate, you will have plenty of opportunities to sample the end result. There will be time to sample typical foods and snacks. You will also be able to taste the chocolate you’ve made in a variety of forms; liquid chocolate, plain chocolate, spiced chocolate and of course, chocolate coffee. An authentic home-made lunch is available at an additional fee.
